Olanzapine & Weight Gain

Olanzapine is an antipsycotic that is often prescribed for those suffering with severe bipolar, like me. For example, it is being used to halt my long period of mania, and to some extent it’s working. The issue I have with it are the side effects. Here is a blurb from BAP.Org.UK about them.

The main way that antipsychotics cause weight gain is by stimulating appetite so that people feel hungry, eat more food and take in more calories. … Both olanzapine and clozapine, drugs with a high risk of weight gain, bind strongly to the histamine H1 and serotonin 5-HT2C receptors.

Antipsychotic: Risk of weight gain
Olanzapine: High
Risperidone: Medium
Aripiprazole: Low

I have personally put on 10kg, I was 86kg before medication, now I am sitting at around 96kg. I don’t look fat or overweight, bit my beer belly has become prominent and very firm.

What is your weight gain stories? or what other side effects?

  1. Over the past two years, I have gained somewhere between 20-25 lbs. I’m on Lamictal and Geodon. Ive been trying so hard to loose the weight by eating very healthy an exercising, but I haven’t lost any weight. So frustrating!!!

  2. 60 rapid pounds olanzapine. I have 5 pounds to go to make target weight. I’ve been on Olanzapine a month for mania (low dose). Shocked I haven’t gained a lot. Mania speeds up my metabolism I think. It’s awful. I’m starting Abilify (can’t spell generic lol) tomorrow if the pharmacy has it ready. Totally nervous. Hang in there and try to eat healthy despite the cravings. Mine are maddening on olanzapine.
