The Stigma of Violence in Mental Health

Just been reading a Newshub article here in New Zealand about the recent terror attack in Christchurch that saw 49 people gunned down in a mosque. What grabbed my attention was the mention of psychosis in the headline and article.

The first thing the authorities and I guess public are drawn to are whether the gunman suffers from a mental health condition. They don’t look into his affiliations or how he was radicalised, instead diving straight into whether he is mentally ill.

This really grates my nerves as this is pretty common in these sought of acts of violence. Why do they insist on claiming mental health being the culprit. I suffer from a mental health illness and I don’t go around killing people.

Rant over.
